This walk starts in Puckeridge, a site on Ermine Street, the main Roman route North from London. From there we visit Gatesbury, the main Iron-Age enclosure of the area and considered the reason for the siting here of the significant Roman town at Braughing, a major junction of numerous Roman Roads.
The owner of Gatesbury has kindly given us permission to visit the site on a one off basis on this one occasion. There is no right of way leading to the site and the land is private.
From Braughing we shall start to chart the course of road RR21, which ran to Great Chesterford, in Essex.
This walk will leave RR21 North of Braughing and head back to Puckeridge through lovely countryside.
It is hoped that the exploration of RR21 will continue in subsequent walks through the Spring and Summer.
There is plenty of parking in the residential streets near the White Hart pub, where we shall meet on the Buntingford Road side.
There is a small car park in Huntsman's Close.
Please do not park in the pub car park.
