This is the first in a potential series of linear, Lea Valley chain walks which could, in time, take us all the way downstream to where the River Lea joins the Thames, near Limehouse Basin.
We will meet outside Hertford East train station and then walk to the nearby Mill Bridge, which marks the head of navigation for the River Lea. We will then turn downstream, following the Lea Navigation, passing the boat basin, Old Barge pub and Hertford Lock 1, crossing the lock island and River Lea, passing Bengeo Hall, the site of an old water mill and so down to the town of Ware with its moored narrowboats plus historic gazebos.
On our way down to Rye House we will pass more locks and several lakes, including Amwell Nature Reserve and Rye Meads RSPB Reserve, so we may see an interesting mix of bird life.
The walk finishes at the site of the former, fortified manor house which gives Rye House its name. Rye house station is nearby for those travelling back to Hertford by train and the Rye House pub should be available for optional refreshments.
