This is a really varied walk with lots of interest. Starting from Melmerby village, we will ascend West onto Melmerby Fell. After the first 15mins there is a steady ascent for about an hour to Knapside Hill (685m). That is most of the ascent for the day! The track is quite good up to then. After, be prepared for rough ground and non-negotiable bog! But it is lovely, honest!! There is a little more ascent to the highest point, Dun Edge (709m). There is then a very gradual descent south to Ladslack Hill, with a final steep stretch into Ardale Beck. We follow part of the Maiden Way which is one of the highest Roman Roads. Leaving the fells at Bank Hall we gradually make our way back to Melmerby on field tracks and small roads. It is a long ish walk but will be taken at a moderate pace.
Plenty of parking in Melmerby but avoid leaving car in The Bake House parking, even though hope to go there at the end. I have made this an early start as it is a long walk and the Bake House closes at 4pm!
There are ground nesting birds, lapwing, curlew and skylarks, so be good to have dogs on leads.
