This walk encompasses woodlands, open countryside, a fernery and a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths (Entry fee £6.50 advance booking advisable).
Starting from Mardley Heath car park we walk to Harmers Green Wood passing the Digswell railway tunnel and air shafts then back to open fields before going under the A1 and the A1000 before proceeding to Welwyn Roman Baths. We then walk into Old Welwyn with its bakeries, cafes, pubs and St Mary’s Church. There is also a memorial to Vincent Van Gogh who walked the 100miles from Ramsgate to Welwyn to visit his sister in 1875/6.
After a short break we carry on to Danesbury Park estate where we can explore the fernery with its Pulhamite rock garden before continuing through Potters Heath to return to Mardley Heath.
The walk is mainly on made up paths with some walking on pavements beside busy roads but it is also quite hilly so requires a reasonable level of fitness.
if you wish to visit the baths, which are literally under the A1M, please purchase tickets early in advance for the 11 o’clock slot from the website link below.
If not visiting there are plenty of picnic tables in the grounds outside.
Toilets are available on site.
Refreshments available in Welwyn but bringing your own is recommended.
