From Rievaulx Abbey we walk through pasture to Bow Bridge and cross over the River Rye. Turning southeastwards to go around Ashberry Hill and into the Ashberry Nature Reserve, we leave the reserve at the northern end, with a short scramble through the undergrowth to get back onto the main path. After a steady climb up Low Gill to Old Byland, there's a section of road walking to the top of Tanker Dale, and we descend to the ponds at the bottom end of the vale. From there it's via Reins Farm, crossing our outward path to Lambert Hall Wood. Turning northwards to Oxen Dale we return following the lower path along the River Rye before re-crossing the Rye and retracing our path back to the Abbey.
Tea and cake afterwards in the Abbey cafe.
As soon as possible after booking, please let the walk leader know if you will be joining us for refreshments after the walk, and if you would like to order a scone.
Paths are generally good. In the reserve the going may be wet underfoot depending on recent weather, and in that area the path may be muddy in places (plus we cross a shallow stream). On the recce there were two fields with cows present, and we came across a shooting party (twice!). Following a very helpful conversion with one of the organizers, we will be sending them a copy of our route and they will endeavour to be shooting elsewhere on the day. A few stiles.
Parking on the roadside close to Rievaulx Abbey. There should be plenty of space at this time of year, but it would be helpful to car share if possible.
