Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims on this picturesque nine-mile walk through the Itchen Valley. Starting in the Georgian town of Alresford, we join the St Swithun’s Way, navigating a lovely mix of quiet country lanes, farm tracks, and open fields.
The route meanders through a string of delightful Hampshire villages, including Ovington, Itchen Abbas, and Martyr Worthy, before reaching the edge of the city at Abbots Barton. While there are a few brief ascents, the terrain is largely flat or gently undulating, making for a very manageable day in the countryside.
We'll have a moderate pace with stops for a packed lunch and mid-afternoon refreshments.
We expect to arrive in Winchester before 4:00pm, allowing for approximately 4 hours of walking and 40 minutes for break.
It is important to bring your food and drink needs for the day. A small mat to sit on would be a useful addition.
Clothing should include layers needed for the conditions. Stout footwear is advisable.
This is a linear walk. Stagecoach's No.64 bus provides half-hourly service between Winchester Broadway and Alresford to get to the start or to return to Alresford.
