The Pocklington Group are walking the Whitby Way in stages from York to Whitby. The Whitby Way starts at York Minster and finishes at Whitby Abbey, and it is designed to include some of the most interesting pilgrimage places in Yorkshire. It can, of course, be enjoyed simply as a walk, for it goes through beautiful scenery. From the flat Vale of York, it climbs to gently undulating country at Crayke, before crossing the North York Moors from south to north using field paths, moorland tracks and ancient paved ways. Finally, it follows the lush Esk Valley to Whitby.
A hired coach (charges apply) is being used to take walkers from the meeting point of each walk to the start point of each stage. Pre-booking on the walk is therefore essential. This stage is now fully booked.
Pre booking is essential as a hired coach is being used. As this stage is now fully booked, please contact Martin Hill at mph60@btinternet.com if you would like to be placed on the reserve list.
A few notes regarding stage one of the Whitby way
Coffee and lunch stops:
There are two locations with seating (although not enough for everyone). One near the start of the walk, at the Fairy Trail https://www.fossfairytrail.com/basic-01 and the other at Wigginton Pond https://wildyork.uk/map-marker/wigginton-duck-pond/.
Depending upon when the coach arrives at the Minster, morning coffee stop could be earlier than the usual or the lunch stop could be later than usual. I’ll put both to the vote on the day, but just to be safe it might be wise to pack a few extra bickies before lunch.
Toilet stops:
With urban areas at the start and wide open country after Wigginton there will be little opportunity for “gentlemen forwards” except perhaps at the woods between Haxby and Wigginton, about an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters into the walk.
Footware:
Most of the walk is on relatively flat dry surfaces, except a stretch of about 10 feet along the bank of the river Foss which is extremely muddy. It will depend on the weather if it remains so muddy or dries up a little.
