Join us on a walk that samples the varied scenic landscapes around the picturesque villages of North Grimston and Birdsall, as well as visiting Wharram Percy, the largest, best preserved, deserted medieval village in England. We start at the English Heritage car park at Wharram Percy and head north up the Wolds Way, through Wharram le Street to the gently undulating track that leads to the bottom of Rabbit Slack. We get some great views across the valley towards Settrington Wood on the way. We then head west towards North Grimston and continue on the Centenary Way through relatively level pasture lands to Birdsall. From Birdsall we head south up the steep hillside to Birdsall Brow, before joining the Wolds Way again for the walk back to the car park via the remains of Wharram Percy village and across the now disused Malton Dodger railway line at the western end of the Burdale Tunnel.
Walker can expect an enjoyable, varied walk of 11.5 miles with some moderate hills and one fairly challenging hill at Birdsall Brow (we will take this at a pace that everyone finds manageable with rests if needed). The path between North Grimston and Birdsall may be very muddy in places if there has been recent rain and there may be some livestock in the fields, but there's plenty of room to walk around it.
