Overview

This is a tremendous walk in the Cheviots with brilliant views (weather permitting).

The walk heads from the Upper Coquet valley on the ancient drove road of The Street, climbing Hindside Knowe, Swineside Law, and Black Braes. We join the Pennine Way for the last stretch to Windy Gyle and Russell’s Cairn. Our descent is via Scotchman's Ford, Little Ward Law, to Murder Cleugh, and then a grassy bridleway along Barrow Law and down to Barrowburn.

There will be plenty of time to take in the views and stop for drinks. Most of the way we are on grassy paths ... with the inevitable damp bits.

Please meet at the Northumberland National Park’s Wedder Leap car park/picnic site at Barrowburn. This is about 5.6 miles up a narrow and winding moorland road north of Alwinton. The nearest public toilets are available in the car park in Alwinton – you’ll pass this on your way up the valley. Car sharing is advised. We try to offer an informal share from the Wentworth car park in Hexham - please contact the walk leader if you are interested (driver or passenger).
