Overview

Join me for a walk on the slopes of the upper Frome valley. Starting from the small village of Witham Friary, we will climb gently up the northern slope to Postlebury Wood. This is a surviving remnant of the once mighty Selwood Forest, which stretched from Cranborne Chase to the Cotswolds. As such it is a rare example of ancient deciduous woodland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. We walk through the dense woodland and emerge to walk to and through the village of Trudoxhill before following part of the MacMillan Way back down the slope to Witham Bridge, next to the site of the former Carthusian Priory. Nothing remains of this except the fish ponds, which we will walk alongside before returning to the start on a path running near the river Frome.

Park and meet in the Recreation Ground car park (free), Witham Friary. Witham Friary is about six miles south west of Frome. The easiest way to get there is to leave the A361 Frome bypass at the Blatchbridge roundabout and take the B3092 towards Maiden Bradley. After driving through West Woodlands, take the first turning on the right, by the Frome Show ground, onto Bunn's Lane. Follow this to the end and then turn right and immediately left across a railway bridge. Then follow the narrow, winding lane to Witham Friary.
