We are the West Wiltshire Ramblers. We open the way for everyone in our local community to enjoy the pleasures of walking.

Another more distant one in the depths of the Somerset Levels. Mainly flat but a couple of bumps. Starts at the place where Alfred burnt the cakes (allegedly) in 878 AD. Nice short climb up to Windmill Hill with great views. Then south through Stoke St. Gregory and across open countryside until the River Parrett. Follow the East Deane Way with great views of the approaching Burrow Mump (a Poundshop Glastonbury Tor) and colourful cows in the meadows. Climb to top of the Mump for more views. Opportunity to stop for afternoon refreshment in the King Alfred pub at Burrowbridge (steer clear of the cakes!). Return to start. Lots of wildlife – swifts, deer and a heron spotted on pre-walk. Two stops - coffee break and lunch (bring a packed lunch).

Layby on the south side of the A361, 1 mile southwest of Burrowbridge. Do not get drawn into the car park ½ mile earlier at a retail premises. The correct car park is a long D shaped car park with two entrances and plenty of space. Lift sharing advised due to distance. Athelney is 43 miles from Trowbridge – AA Route Planner gives a journey time of 1 hour 15 minutes. I’d advise adding an extra 30 mins to be sure. The start point is a straightforward drive – A 361 to Glastonbury, A39 through Street to Ashcott, leave A39 for the returned A361 towards Taunton. The start point is beside the A361 between Burrowbridge and East Lyng. [As this is a more distant drive I will postpone at the time if weather conditions look very wet.
