Overview

A lovely South Wiltshire walk to the west of Broad Chalke on the edge of Cranborne Chase. Starts in the village of Ebbesbourne Wake going south up to Barrow Hill and then East Combe Wood. A short walk along the drove road and then a walk north through West End and up on to Prescombe Down. Return to Ebbesboune through some wonderfully sculpted chalk hills. The village was the home and is the resting place of W.E.V. Young, foreman and unsung hero of Alexander Keiller's Avebury excavations a century ago. It is not hard to see why he loved coming back to this landscape on a regular basis when he had a free weekend.  Two stops - a coffee break and a lunch stop. Bring a packed lunch. You will find poles helpful if you use them.

The most direct route from the Trowbridge area is down the A350 to Shaftesbury, A30 east to just beyond Ludwell, then sideroad south-east through Berwick St. John and Alvediston. 30 miles from Trowbridge - 58 mins. There is a small village hall car park so car sharing strongly advised [closer to the date the hall authorities will be consulted and a small donation may be requested if approved]. Ebbesbourne Wake is a small village packed into a valley with narrow lanes - a very small amount of roadside parking can be found in places. There is a long stretch of straight road about five minutes away towards West End on Duck Street.
