Walking in the Grampians
Our local groups are organised into 59 regional areas.
Grampian Area was formed in 1985 and has been coordinating activities for the Aberdeen Group, first to be formed in 1982, and Stonehaven and Inverurie Groups. Moray Group with members from the surrounding towns of Elgin, Forres and Keith is also part of the Area structure. Our youngest “group” is Aberdeen Young Walkers who were formed in 2015. During the last 40 years the Area has seen major changes with the formation of the Cairngorms National Park Authority and the Trump International golf course at the Menie Links north of Aberdeen.
The Groups run their own programmes of walks and meet annually, normally in February, for the Area Annual General Meeting when there is a morning walk before the formal meeting in the afternoon.
Representatives from the Area are on the Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray Outdoor Access Forums and also attend meetings of the North East Mountain Trust and Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Association and more recently the North East Scotland Coastal Trust.
Over the years we have been consulted on many different matters and issues including the dualling of the A96 (Aberdeen - Inverness road), Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and access at a number of rural and urban locations.
