Overview

After our successful Devon Area Members Day, brilliantly organised last year by the North Devon Group, based on the ‘Rest and be Thankful’ pub, at Wheddon Cross, we have decided to organise another event for members to meet each other and join one of three walks. The Exeter & District Group have kindly offered to host the event this year. We have chosen Okehampton as it does have public transport connections, rail links from Exeter and bus services from several places. Parking is in local car parks which are pay and display, there is nearby on-street parking which will require a short walk.

The London Inn has offered us the use of an upstairs room, where we may leave stuff during the day whilst walking. There is no charge for the hire of the room, but they expect us to order food/ drink from the bar. There will be free tea and coffee available from a machine at the entrance.

There will be three walks offered by the Exeter & District Group all starting at 10.30am and then finishing back at the London Inn.

  • A 10.5 mile moderate walk – will visit Okehampton Castle, the Golf Course, Meldon Reservoir, before ascending to the lower slopes of Yes Tor and West Mill Tor, Row Tor, and then from Klondyke Corner, returning via East Hill, Fatherford, and Ball Hill and Simmons Park.
  • There will be an 8-mile moderate walk – which will pass through Simmons Park, heading up the East Okement to Belstone, the Nine Maidens, East Bowden and Lower Halstock, Klondyke Corner, Okehamoton Station, Okehampton Castle and return.
  • The 5-mile short, moderate walk will incorporate some of Okehampton’s local history, in Simmons Park, Ball Hill, Fatherford, East Hill, Klondyke Corner, Okehampton Station, the Okehampton Castle and return.

If you wish to submit an entry for the Area Photographic Competition, with this year’s them being ‘What makes Devon a special place to walk’, you have until Monday, 15 September. There will be a £25.00 prize for the winning photo.

Photos to be taken between 1 September 2024 and 1 September 2025, with a maximum of three entries per person. The result will be announced shortly before the walks start.
