Overview

Leaving Tipton St John, the walk begins with a level and gentle stretch south along the River Otter.  The route then turns east and after passing through Harpford we then climb steadily through farmland gradually rising to open views across the Otter Valley and beyond. After reaching the high ground of Beacon Hill we joins the East Devon Way and wind through the wooded slopes to the viewpoint at White Cross.  From here we begin our descent before emerging into the open once more to rejoin the River Otter.  We then pick up the trail alongside the river again to return to Tipton St John.

This walk combines moderate ascents with well-defined footpaths, bridleways, and some quiet country lanes. The varied landscape—riverside, open farmland, hilltop views, and mature woodland—offers a rich and rewarding experience of the East Devon countryside.
