All are welcome to join us for a 6.5 mile circular ramble starting and finishing in Ermine Street - Saint Martin's Green car park. Our walk will take in five nature reserves and will pass the site of a medieval moated enclosure, pass through the grounds of Haileybury and will end with a 2 mile stretch along Ermine Street, one of Roman Britain's main arterial routes linking Londinium (London) with the north and east, including Lincoln and York. We will pass through deep and shady woodland, cross livestock fields, pass under the A10 twice and walk past a new housing development.
This scenic and varied walk takes in some particularly attractive woodland sections. Parts of the route can be muddy and wet, especially through the woods, so sturdy walking boots are recommended. Gaiters and walking poles may also be useful if you have them.
To access these lovely woodland areas, the route includes short stretches close to the A10 and a brief section alongside a new housing development. While there may be some road and construction noise in these places, we feel this is more than compensated for by the quality of the countryside elsewhere on the walk.
The walk crosses several fields containing livestock (sheep) and includes a number of boarded walkways. Some of these require care when crossing due to damaged or missing boards; these issues have been reported to Hertfordshire County Council by the walk leader.
With thanks to David Brewer for developing and generously sharing this route on the Hertfordshire Walker website.
