Circular walk approx 7.5 miles with approx 1200 ft ascent. Although I have graded it as moderate it may feel strenuous if the weather is hot!
After a short distance on the minor road east from the start we walk north east on Moor Lane passing the forestry car park and then ascend to Square Corner. There should be good views across the moor from here if it's clear and hopefully the heather will be in bloom.
We then follow the Cleveland Way north west down to Oakdale and then cross the beck and climb west through Big Wood. From here we walk south along Thimbleby Bank (good views to the west) and then descend to Over Silton. From here we follow field path and tracks back to the start.
There will be a ten minute break. Please feel free to bring a drink/snack to enjoy.
The first part of the walk to Square Corner is on minor road and good tracks. The descent to Oakdale on the Cleveland Way is paved and stepped. The climb through Big Wood and the path along Thimbleby Bank are rough and stony in places, could be wet/muddy after rain and quite overgrown in places.
If weather is clear, there are good views from many parts of this walk.
The climbs may feel strenuous if it is warm and we may take more time to allow for additional breaks if this is the case. There is nowhere to buy extra food or drink on the route so please bring sufficient for the walk.
