This walk comprises woodland paths, tracks, estate road and country roads with uphill sections, not too steep. From the Old Bridge at Lanercost we follow Quarry Beck on the woodland path, then along Brampton Ridge to the “Sands” on the outskirts of Brampton. From Brampton we turn onto the tree-lined path of the old ‘Dandy Line’ to Brampton Station. Passing by Milton and through Miltonrigg Wood we join a quiet country lane back to Lanercost passing Naworth Castle on the way. This direction offers the finest approach view of the Castle.
The Belted Will memorial stands on top of Brampton Ridge (William, the youngest son of the Howards of Naworth Castle). The building on the Sands is the Howard Memorial Shelter. A dandy was a horse-drawn train. In Miltonrigg woods modern druids of Cumbria hold ceremonies in the winter months beneath an ancient beech tree. Naworth Castle is 14th century, initially owned by the Dacre family, passed to the Howards by marriage.
