Leaving Princetown we head south to make the steady ascent to Hart Tor before descending past the stone rows to cross the infant River Meavy. A cheeky nip takes us up to Black Tor for a rest and refreshment. Steadily down then along the leat and through the plantation to exit the trees by Lowery Cross. A short stretch of tarmac follows before the main pull of the day, the ever upwards ascent of Peek Hill to arrive at its small tor and its buried secrets. A lunch break will follow before going down from Sharpitor and back up to Leedon Tor. Just before joining the old rail track, Fur Tor and Yes Tor will be passed (the other ones!). A steady climb follows up to Foggintor and its watery quarry before we take the old bridleway back to Princetown and a welcome cuppa at the Fox Tor cafe.
Moorland tracks and paths with peat and water no doubt featuring. Start and finish will be on tarmac alongside the main roads through Princetown and the old rail path will be stony and gravelly. The stretch from Lowery Cross will be on tarmac unless the drought has set in by the end of May. Main road crossing between Sharpitor and Leedon tor needs extra care. A head for heights perhaps necessary for the tour around the top of Foggintor Quarry. A moderate walk but with a real climb in the middle. Bring plenty of fluid as well as snacks for coffee and lunch.
Walk leader will go direct to Princetown. Use the DNPA car park or park on the road. Meet outside the old Visitors Centre for the start of the walk. Please text Paul to book onto the walk.
