Overview

Starting at Osney Bridge, close to Oxford station, the Thames path passes through a quiet part of Oxford, with fine views of Christchurch Meadows and distant dreaming spires. The route then passes through open fields and ancient water meadows with a distinctly rural and isolated feel with only a couple of locks and small villages before reaching the historic market town of Abingdon. At Iffley Lock we'll make a short detour to the attractive village to view the beautiful Norman Church of St Mary the Virgin. Please bring a picnic lunch to eat near Sandford Lock with its infamous weir known as the Sandford Lasher.  We'll then have a short break at the Red Lion for drinks and toilets. We should reach Abingdon in time to explore its attractive streets and buildings and have refreshments before getting the bus back to Oxford or on to Didcot Parkway.

The most economical way to travel from Ealing Broadway is to get the 8.56 Elizabeth Line train to Reading, and then the 9.48 GWR train to Oxford, arriving 10.16. Alternatively, the quicker but more expensive option from Paddington is to get the 9.22 GWR direct service, also arriving 10.16. Probably the cheapest ticket is a cheap day return to Oxford but if you plan to return from Didcot Parkway check at a ticket office.
