A walk to explore the riversides and countryside near Reading. Starting from the station, the walk will first walk past some of the historic sites of Reading such as the Abbey and the Gaol. The walk then follows the first part of the St James' Way along the Kennet and Avon canal as far as Burghfield Bridge for lunch. The return to Reading is initially along the canal and then via the Old Coley Branch Line and alongside Holy Brook back to Reading Town Centre.
Please bring a picnic lunch, but a stop will be made for drinks and WCs at The Cunning Man, Burghfield Bridge at lunchtime. Plenty of refreshment places in Reading at the end of the walk.
Either take the Elizabeth Line departing Paddington at 9.17am, Ealing Broadway at 9.26am arriving Reading at 10.12am, or take the GWR service departing Paddington at 9.48am arriving Reading at 10.11am. Please meet on the overbridge within Reading Station by the stairway from Platform 8/9.
There are no significant hills on this walk, but some paths may be muddy, but passable after heavy rain.
At the end of the walk, it would be possible to visit the excellent Reading Museum, which is free and open until 1700 on Saturdays, The museum has a Victorian copy of the Bayeux tapestry.
