From the car park we go via Usk Church and onto Usk Castle. Leaving the Castle following lanes and footpaths, we will go through woodland and fields, passing a small pond, Kitty Beech Ride and down to a waterfall. From here we follow a good track which has a lovely array of snowdrops. This will lead us down to the road where we will cross to walk along the bank of the river Usk until we are able to cross the river by means of an old railway bridge, at the site of the former Usk station.
Once on the other side of the river, we will cross the main road and make our way via fields and woodlands to reach the Cefn Ila Woodland, a Woodland Trust/ Coed Cadw site. Grassy paths through the woodland site will take us to the historic Cefn Ila maternity hospital and walled garden. Leaving Cefn Ila, our walk will again pick up paths across fields back into Usk.
On clear day we can see Sugarloaf, Skirrid and Blorenge lined up together in the distance, and also across to Twmbarlwm.
Paths can be muddy and slippery in some places so walking pole is advisable.
Pre-booking is required by contacting Walk Leader, Geeta C. (07703327029).
