This walk starts in the village of Reed, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Retth. We will walk North via Hatchpen, hopefully enjoying views to Cambridge and beyond. Walking through Newsells Park Stud on well maintained paths we will look out for nice horses. Newsells village is also mentioned in the Domesday Book and has some impressive houses. On the way to Barkway we will pass The Obelisk which was erected by Sir Hugh Rose, later Lord Strathnairn, in memory of his favourite charger, which had carried him well during the Indian Mutiny.
Barkway is named in the Domesday Book as Birchwig. The main London to Cambridge coach route passed through Barkway. We will return to Reed via Periwinkle Hill and Sallow Wood.
A short afternoon walk of roughly 4 miles, visiting Barkway and Reed Church, will be offered after this walk.
There is a possibility of a coffee shop stop in Barkway, but this can’t be guaranteed so please bring your own refreshments.
Our walks are relaxed affairs where weather, ground conditions, people we meet along the way, views, nature, and wildlife can all affect the time a walk might take, so our end times are approximate. So please bear this in mind when joining us on one of our walks.
