Overview

We begin our 8.0 mile (13.0 km) circular walk at Ware Railway Station, conveniently served by regular trains from London Liverpool Street via Hertford East (approx. 45–55 minutes). After a short walk through the town (please take care at road crossings), we join the tranquil towpath of the River Lee Navigation, following it until we cross over to enter the scenic Amwell Nature Reserve.

Here, we’ll take a moment to enjoy the serene lakes, reeds, and birdlife—including swans, coots, and perhaps a glimpse of a kingfisher or heron. From the reserve, the route continues northeast along the Amwell Walkway, passing Oak Tree Cottages before turning south.

We then follow a delightful stretch through mixed woodland and gently undulating arable fields, offering a pleasant contrast in terrain and scenery. Our route brings us to the picturesque village of Stansted Abbots, where we stop for lunch (picnic, or local pub or café).

From there, we return to the River Lee Navigation, cross once more, and follow quiet field-edge paths back into Ware, finishing where we started at the Railway Station.

  • Estimated Time: 4 hours (leisurely pace with breaks)
  • Terrain: Mostly flat with gentle inclines; a mix of towpath, woodland trails, and field-edge paths. Surfaces can be muddy after rain—sturdy walking shoes or boots recommended.
  • Public Transport: Ware Station is well connected by train from London Liverpool Street via Broxbourne and Hertford East. Local bus services also operate from surrounding towns.
