Starting in the chocolate box village of Exton, the walk takes us through open Rutland countryside to Empingham via Fort Henry. From Empingham we go down to the North shore of Rutland Water and walk westwards along the lakeside to the bluebell woods at Barnsdale. We backtrack slightly to Whitwell and then follow the Viking way returning to Exton.
Parking is available in Exton on Stamford Road. Please car share if possible.

The walk is predominantly track and field with no significant gradients. We cross the A606, Oakham to Stamford road in 2 locations with good visibility. There are a small number of timber stiles, all in good condition.
We will have an early coffee stop at Fort Henry, lunch, lakeside on Rutland Water and a final rest and drink stop at Barnsdale. There are 3 public toilets along the lakeshore.
There is a pub in Exton at the end of the walk or some may prefer to take late afternoon tea at Hambleton's bakery which is approximately 1 mile north of Exton.
