We start from a layby north of Royal Oak at Bildershaw on the A68 and cross fields to the old Roman road of Dere Street. We go across this road and along field paths to reach woodland then we follow a track through Brusselton Wood to reach the old Roman road again, which in this section is known as Haggs Lane. We follow this route through these ancient woods and then onto a farm access track until we reach an enclosed bridleway. We walk along this bridleway passing over the line of an old railway and we will turn off to cross more fields and walk through Brusselton Wood again to reach a bridleway that takes us back to the cars.
Level walking most of the way with a long downhill and uphill section. Total ascent and descent is 685 feet. It could be muddy in places and there could be some overgrown areas especially along the final bridleway.
Brusselton Wood is an ancient woodland of oak, birch, hawthorn and blackthorn and is particularly beautiful in autumn.
We will take a coffee stop about an hour into the walk. We will also stop shortly before we get back to the cars for a snack/lunch. We will, however, be going to the Ulnerby Farmshop for refreshments after the walk so you may wish to have lunch there.
