Not quite a figure of eight, from the car park to Captain Cook's Monument, dropping down to Mill Bank Wood, past Bankside Farm, back through the woods and past Oak Tree Farm. Across Great Ayton Moor to the Hanging Stone. Returning along the Cleveland Way, but with a circuitous detour to avoid the long flight of steps down to the car park, through the old quarry and a late iron age enclosure.
Mostly good paths and tracks, one steepish narrow path down from CC's Monument where a stick might be of help. Total ascent of c. 1400' , mostly in three steady climbs, with the first from the car park up to the monument, but all before the midway point. One stile. Couple of short stretches along very quiet lanes that only lead to the local farm houses. Tea and scones afterwards at Fletchers Farm Coffee Shop.
