We walk out of the village through the church yard and out onto the road. A quater of a mile along, we cross a stile on the left into a field. We cross this and two more fields coming out onto a road. Here we'll walk up the hill until we fork off to the left up a grassy lane. We emerge from here in Birstwith. We'll walk down into the village, up another lane to a large stable complex. From here we cross more fields, again joining roads, which we follow until we join the Nidderdale Way, which we follow to Swincliffe. Here, we begin the return, climbing first along a farm track then across fields and along roads back to Birstwith, where we retrace our steps back to Hampsthwaite.
It is likely to be very muddy in places (it definitley was on my recce). We may well also encounter cattle, horses, sheep and shetland ponies in the fields we walk through.
