The New River is described as neither new (dating back to about 1613) nor a river (in fact it is an aqueduct). It was built to bring water into London and is still doing so today. Thames Water maintain the river and have a leaflet describing the New River Path (see website link in this walk listing). This is the first of a series of 5 walks finishing at Hertford East Station. The Path diverges from the New River along roads in several places.
On today's walk we walk past St John's Gate and on towards New River Head where, until 1946, the New River used to terminate. Sadly, because of the construction of the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, we cannot visit here except possibly to view Windmill Base (was used to pump water). Today we will only meet the New River towards the end of the walk. We will follow the path of the original New River but it has been mostly filled in. There are sections where it does appear as a feature. We travel via Canonbury to Clissold Park which has remains of New River as a feature. We then walk on to Woodberry Wetlands where the New River now terminates. Finally we walk on via Finsbury Park to Harringay Station.
Depending on numbers on walk we will use one cafe either in Clissold Park (toilets), Woodberry Wetlands (small cafe), or Finsbury Park (toilets).
Please reserve a place on walk by text to 07884 338619 by Sunday 8th February so that I have an idea of numbers on walk and contact details - thank you.
