Overview

Starting in the historic centre of Reading, the walk follows part of the newly created St James Way pilgrimage route along the Kennet and Avon Canal to finish at Theale. Early stop at Reading Abbey where pilgrimage route starts, easy summer walking on river and canal paths thereafter.

Lunch: Pub (Cunning Man) or picnic. Picnickers use pub for drinks and loos.

Train: Paddington (GWR) 10:05 arr. Reading 10:31 (Newbury train). Buy return to Theale. OR Paddington (Elizabeth Line) 09:47 arr. Reading 10:41. Freedom Pass will cover the journey as far as Reading, but note that although Freedom passes are accepted, they can't be scanned at Reading - show pass to staff at barrier. Buy single Theale to Reading for return journey as far as Reading; change to Elizabeth line at Reading.
