We start by strolling east along the Thames from Strand on the Green (lovely old houses and pubs) past rowing clubs to Chiswick. Here we branch away from the river past St Nicholas church (graves include William Hogarth, Whistler and two of Cromwell's daughters).
A (mercifully) short stretch of the noisy A4 takes us past Hogarth's house to Chiswick House Park. Here, after passing the orchid house, we reach Chiswick House (Palladian revival villa) for a toilet and refreshment stop at the cafe.
We then make our way through the park and pleasant residential streets back to Strand on the Green where we may, optionally, have a refreshing drink in one of the many riverside pubs.
Largely level walking but underpass at A4 and steps to bridge over railway near end of walk.
Reached by 65 bus from Ealing Broadway or Richmond/Kingston or South Western train to Kew Bridge. Gunnersbury tube station (District) is a 15 minute walk.
