Overview

This walk was inspired by Dr Julia Neville, Project Manager, Devon in 1920’s. The walk will look at the life of William Whitley, his life, and connections with Buckland-in-the Moor Parish.

In 1921, two properties, Welstor and Buckland Court came up for sale and he purchased both. He resided in Buckland, while his brother Herbert continued to live in Paignton, pursuing his wildlife interests at what became Paignton Zoo.

The walk will visit the Ten Commandments Stones, Buckland-in-the Moor village church, with their connections to the Whitley family. It will also look at the remains of some ancient Dartmoor crosses, some historic boundary stones and a mystery over the correct location of a Dartmoor tor.
