Walking in Herefordshire

Herefordshire is a large, sparsely populated county providing diverse and beautiful walking. The Herefordshire Area Ramblers aims to protect the paths and green areas in the county for people to enjoy walking and to discover new places and the joys of being outside. We are a leading voice on walking matters in the Herefordshire and welcome new members to help us with this work.

We support our three local Ramblers groups who organise regular volunteer led walks (see below). Walking is a great way to get outside, make new friends and discover how walking boosts your health and happiness.

Footpaths

Practical Footpath Work. In the summer months we hold a working party fortnightly on a Friday to carry out pre-arranged practical work on the footpath network - a very rewarding job in which you will see visible results for your hard work. Looking after the Herefordshire Walking Trails. We look after three of the Trails in the county, The Herefordshire Trail, The Mortimer Trail, and the Three Choirs Way. Volunteers look after a section of approximately six miles, Waymarking, cutting back at stiles and keeping undergrowth under control. More serious problems are reported to the Working party. Don’t Lose Your Way. Submit claims for any unrecorded public rights of way. This is primarily a research exercise going through historical records to prove the existence of a right of way. If you know of any paths left off the Definitive Map or would like to help with the research then please contact Tom: project2026@herefordshireramblers.org.uk. If you are interested in becoming involved and volunteering in any of these activities contact Mike: volunteers@herefordshireramblers.org.uk.

Walking Trails In Herefordshire

From Marcle Ridge

The Three Choirs Way

This 100 mile footpath runs between Gloucester, Hereford, and Worcester. The theme of the walk is to link the music festival celebrated at the three Cathedrals for over 300 years and walking. The Way serves to strengthen and promote those links, by providing a glorious walking through the attractive and varied countryside of the three counties, evoked in the adage “blessed is the eye between Severn and Wye”.

Little Brampton Scar

The Mortimer Trail

This 30 mile trail runs from Ludlow in Shropshire to Kington in north west Herefordshire. It follows a succession of hills and ridges in the northern part of the county. The walk was devised some years ago by Herefordshire Ramblers in conjunction with Herefordshire Council.

Little Dewchurch

The Herefordshire Trail

This 154-mile circular route takes in the five market towns of Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye, Kington, Leominster, and Bromyard and some delightful villages between. Spectacular views can be had from the hill tops of Marcle Ridge, Garway Hill and Wapley Hill to name a few. It was devised by members of the Hereford Group in 2000.
