A hike around the water catchment for Worm Gill (better known as the southern side of Ennerdale...with a sting in the tail).
Starting from the height of the Cold Fell road, but first watch out for the "wild" horses, we head briskly up Blakeley Raise and then over Grike and Crag Fell. Easy gradients then take us over Boathow Crag and Iron Crag (please refer to John D's excellent "A Pictorial Guide to the Lake District's Crags" for further information). We'll have coffee and lemon drizzle cake possibly somewhere over Iron Crag. There's a final kick up to Haycock before we retreat back to Caw Fell. After passing the real Caw Fell life gets difficult as we leave any sign of path, boulder fields and tussocks in abundance all the way to Worm Gill intake. After a few stream crossings at the in take we struggle up Lank Rigg's unending west face. But end it does, eventually, at the summit with excellent views around! The final stage is down Whoap Beck, and a little hop back up and over to the cars. (Hopefully time to debrief in the Fox & Hounds in Ennerdale).
