A varied walk full of interest and wonderful views. We begin from Rosthwaite beside a re-wiggled beck, climb through woodland and pasture to reach the picturesque Dock Tarn, then descend to a SSSI wetland, before reaching the charming hamlet of Watendlath and following Watendlath beck as far as High Lodore falls, when we descend towards the southern shores of Derwent Water. We return via Grange and Low How Wood, following the River Derwent upstream to Rosthwaite.
We will park in a National Trust carpark with limited space, please consider car-sharing and bring your NT card if you have one. We walk on clear paths and tracks, with a short section on the road. The stepped path up to the tarn is long and steep at first, and the descents both from the tarn and from High Lodore are also fairly steep. The path above the tarn is very peaty and can be slippery. A walking pole is advised. The walk has been described as Strenuous because of the steepness of the ascent and descent.
