This is the first of our walks on the 78 mile Capital Ring and is one of the greenest and most attractive sections. It begins in historic Woolwich following the Thames Path to the Thames Barrier before heading south through parks, commons and woods to reach the highest point on the Capital Ring (128 metres) close to Severndroog Castle, with magnificent views. The walk continues through Jack Wood and Oxleas Wood where we will stop for lunch (cafe or picnic + toilets). In the afternoon the route goes through more woods and parks and past Eltham Palace to finish via King John's Walk at Mottingham station. Some paved paths but also quite a lot of rough paths and grass which could be muddy at this time of year and several quite steep slopes and flights of steps.
Woolwich is on the Abbey Wood branch of the Elizabeth Line. Return from Mottingham with 4 trains an hour to Charing Cross.
Possible drop-out at 7 miles at Falconwood Station (National Rail).
Walk 2 will be Saturday 6th April 2024
