We head East out of Merstham Station and negotiate the M25 and M23 before climbing to the Pilgrims Way with excellent views. The path continues with a fair bit of ups and downs, some of it on dirt roads but also through some woods. More viewpoints await and we also pass a vineyard and a quarry. Lunch will have to be a picnic with some bushes for a comfort stop as there are no cafes or pubs. We briefly join the Vanguard Way before descending into Oxted via the scenic route. If we make good time there is a tearoom at Oxted station which is open until 4pm.
Southern trains run mostly from Victoria. The Victoria 9:38 train (Clapham Junction 9:45) gets to Merstham at 10:11.
For anyone with a Freedom Pass/Oyster 60 card: a single from boundary zone 6 to Merstham and a single from Oxted to boundary zone 6. For anyone under 60: return from Victoria to Merstham and a single from Oxted to East Croydon (East Croydon is common to both routes).
Return trains are half hourly.
There are toilets at Merstham and Oxted stations.
