We start our walk by following the woodland track besides the beck towards Brothers Water. After passing Hartsop Hall farm we head deep into Dovedale, following the path under Hartsop above How, passing almost directly under the Dovedale slabs high on the fellside above us. On reaching the head of the valley, with the cliffs of Dove Crag in front, we follow the path to the right of the crags ascending on a steep pitched path into Houndshope Cove. The ground now becomes softer and peaty, before rising to reach the ridge path that leads to the rocky summit of Hart Crag (2697ft/822m). Here we will have time to take a breather and admire the views to Link Cove and the Rydal Beck valley. Our descent from Hart Crag is on steep rock/scree which can be tricky under foot in any weather conditions, so time has been allowed for a careful descent. Once clear of the scree we continue on a grassy rolling ridge to the summit of Hartsop above How, at 1923ft/586m it makes for a great view point looking over the wild Hunsett Cove. Our path then continues to descend northwards before entering Low Woods and joining our return woodland path.
