Overview

This walk will be led by Maggie S. & Jane P.
North Tawton, a small, unpretentious town, has several claims to fame: the birthplace of Dr William Budd, an important Victorian epidemiologist; the home of former poet laureate Ted Hughes from 1961 until shortly before his death in 1998; the filming location for Jennifer Saunders’ TV series ‘Jam and Jerusalem’, and recent LIDAR surveys disclosing a major network of Roman roads around what was then Nemetostatio.  This is a moderately hilly walk taking in some of these features, then following the Devonshire Heartland Way and the Tarka Trail, to Bondleigh and Whetstone, returning via Lowton and Ashridge. (5A bus runs hourly from Exeter to North Tawton).
