From Sawbridgeworth Station we join the tranquil River Stort Navigation towpath for over 2 miles northwards, then cross a footbridge to pass through Thorley Wash, a wetland nature reserve. We proceed up to Thorley Church, then continue west across good field tracks between large agricultural fields, turning south via Mathams Wood to Allen's Green. Having had our picnic lunch along the route, we hope to use the Pub at Allen's Green for a drinks/toilet stop. Another 3 miles via Tharbies brings us back to Sawbridgeworth and as we reach close to the centre we have the opportunity to divert into the original centre of the village to view some old buildings and the Great Church of St Mary, before heading down a quiet, green route to the station.
No toilets at Sawbridgeworth Station, use toilets at Liverpool St. Station.
Generally good paths with easy walking, maybe one small section of muddy towpath after rainy conditions. No steep hills.
Only 2 metal stiles either side of our rail crossing point.
Much of area walked is quite open/exposed to weather, so little shelter from strong sun or heavy rain, so come prepared for the weather, which could be quite hot.
Bring picnic lunch and plenty of water, if hot.
