We walk 'The Ridgeway' for a couple of miles SW ascending steadily, then descend down through Tring Park with good views over the Chiltern countryside and town of Tring. Then it is fairly level walking for the rest of the walk. We will pass through the older part of the town which was originally sited where the prehistoric Icknield Way crosses Roman Akeman St. The character of the town has been influenced by the Rothchild family who lived at Tring Park from 1872 until the 1940s. We pass close to the zoological museum, then explore part of the old High St. area with a mid morning break. We'll visit the memorial gardens, which was part of the Rothchild estate and contains a giant sized Wellingtonia tree, planted by the Rothchilds. There are information memorial boards around the lakeside path linked to the events of WW2. The focal part of the old town is the large 15th century church. Leaving old Tring we walk northwards, following a small stream between housing for a mile, to later join the Wendover Arm of the canal through Little Tring and onto Wilstone Reservoir. Our picnic lunch will be in this area and soon after we hope to stop near Wilstone at Mead's Farmhouse Kitchen for drinks, toilets and a quick look in the farm shop. Soon after, we join the GU canal and pass Startops and Marsworth Reservoirs, plus a number of locks. Hopefully we'll have time to stop at the canalside pub 'Grand Junction Arms' at Bulbourne before the final 40 mins walk from there back to Tring station.
No toilet at Tring Station. Toilets near cafe and at pub.
