We will see the remains of four 19th Century industries - china clay, brickmaking, iron mining and granite quarrying. We will cross the River Plym, walk close to the River Meavy, where we will see the remains of the Shaugh Brickworks, the Smithy at the Ferro-Ceramic Mine (aka Dewerstone Iron Mine) and other nearby industrial remains. We will then pass seven quarries, as well as walking up and back down the inclined plane. We shall look for the Pixie (or the Puckie) Stone, pass Dewerstone Cottage, and then walk beside the Meavy, through the Shaugh Brick Works, with the remains of the Brogden-Caspar Tunnel Kiln, and the confluence of the Rivers Plym and Meavy.
We will probably visit a pub/café after the walk.
Please book with John Howell for the walk and state if interested in food after the walk.
In association with Dartmoor Preservation Association.
If you would like to join this walk, please notify the leader, preferably by email, so that they can inform you of any late changes to arrangements. Also please state if you are interested in food after the walk.
