Overview

The journey from Epping Forest to Harwich continues, today from Chappel & Wakes Colne to Boxted Cross. This is the sixth walk in a series of eight across Essex.

Whether you are joining us for the first time on this trail or you are a seasoned walker of The Essex Way, you are welcome to join me for another taste of this underrated and glorious county. With much more to offer than is rumoured, Essex gifts walkers with spectacular scenery, expressive skies and an enormous amount of fascinating history along the journey.

We begin today by retracing our steps past the Chappel Viaduct and Pope's Hall before rejoining The Essex Way to Fordstreet. Following the River Colne we walk through Fordham Hall Estate where river otters and skylarks may greet us, whilst cricket bats slumber overhead. After passing through West Bergholt, mentioned in The Domesday Book, we head to Great Horkesley, Dedham Vale vineyard and are rewarded with our first glimpse of The Stour Valley, before reaching Boxted Cross.

No booking required.

Please bring a picnic lunch. The lunch stop will be determined by the speed of the group and there is no guarantee of drinks or bathrooms being available at our lunch stop. We do pass several small village shops where water or ice creams can be purchased throughout the walk.

The finish time is an estimate and is dependent upon several factors including the size and speed of the group, environmental conditions and the number of stops taken.

Dogs are welcome with well behaved owners who respect other walkers and requests via signage to walk their dogs on leads at times. There are ample opportunities for off lead time throughout the walk.
