Overview

Join us for an attractive circular walk from Berwick, the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path  (www.cuckmerepilgrimpath.org.uk), which connects seven attractive churches in villages in the Cuckmere Valley and takes in the Long Man of Wilmington and the bustling village of Alfriston where we will stop for lunch. The walk will be brisk (2.5-3 miles/hour) and mostly gently undulating, with one somewhat steep ascent and descent just before lunch.

For those who are interested in "collecting" churches, there will be the option of purchasing a passport for £2.50 to be stamped in each church (note that passports will be subject to availability - I will try to contact our first church to ask them to put out quite a few).

We will stop in Alfriston for lunch at about 1pm after four churches. Please bring a packed lunch - there may be an opportunity to sample the various cafes and pubs, but there will not be time for a full pub lunch.

At the end of the walk, for those that wish to stay on for a drink, there is an option to stop off at The Berwick Inn pub close to Berwick station.

Travel Take the 08:46 train from London Victoria to Lewes, which also calls at Clapham Junction at 08:53 and East Croydon at 09:03. At Lewes, change to the 10:14 train to Berwick arrives 10:25.

NOTE: the train from London will likely be very busy with people going to walk the Seven Sisters from Seaford. There will be a mad rush across Lewes station to get the connecting train. Our train is NOT this train - you are looking for a stopping train to Eastbourne, but the times are typically very similar to the Seaford train and there is a risk you get carried away and follow the crowd. Don't do this - please check the train information carefully or you will end up in the wrong place!! If you are on a very busy train from Lewes (unless this walk is wildly popular!) you are probably on the wrong train. Good luck!

Return trains from Berwick depart hourly at xx57 - we should arrive in time to take the return train at either 15:57 or (to be safe) 16:57. As on the way out, you will need to change trains at Lewes.

You should buy a return ticket to Berwick (Sussex)

No booking required.

The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors, such as, weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken.
