We will leave Calne on field footpaths entering into the Bowood estate. Following the undulating public footpath we will cross the head of the lake with Bowood House in the distance. Then alongside the golf course into Derry Hill.
Following Old Road we will walk down to the very busy and fast A4. Using the pavements we will gingerly cross the A4 twice before entering the footpath along the former Chippenham to Calne railway line. Here we will find what is left of Black Dog Halt railway Station. It use to be the private stop for the Marquess of Lansdowne.
The footpath will take us into Castle Park where there is a very small section of the Wilts & Berks canal spur which ran into Calne.
Then back to the car park.
This walk is predominantly on good well maintained footpaths some of which will be muddy after rain.
One main hill and that is down the A4.
Two stiles, one NOT suitable for BIG dogs.
Bring a snack, a drink and something to sit on for one stop.
Due to unpredictable weather please check your emails before leaving home in case the walk has had to be cancelled.
Please email the walk leader to book a place.
