Lovely area south of Shaftesbury. Start from the Trailway car park near Shillingstone, walk to Child Okeford and then climb up Hambledon Hill. Descend and then up Hod Hill. On to Stourpaine and then return along the Stour valley to Shillingstone.
Iron Age hill fort builders and the Romans left their marks here. But most excitingly, this was the scene of the showdown in the Civil War between Oliver Cromwell and The Clubmen of Dorset, Wilts and Somerset who armed themself to drive off both Royalists and Parliamentarians (a plague on both their houses). Two stops - coffee and lunch. Bring packed lunch. Strong possibility of a cafe at the end.
