Overview

"...He had two sons and a daughter fair..." Starting outside St. Mary's Church in Bruton we head north-west through some glorious Somerset countryside - at times it feels like you are on top of the world looking down. Through Stoney Stratton and up to the foot of the hill fort at Small Down Knoll. Return journey takes us through Westcombe and Batcombe Vale before coming back in to Bruton. This is a hilly walk (similar in feel to the combes south of Bath) with at least five 5-10 minute uphill climbs. At the end Bruton offers opportunities for a coffee stop to monitor progress on the day.

Look at the link for more than you ever need to know about "Bruton Town" the folk song. I like the bit about the variant called "The Basil Pot" where a woman lops off the head of a murdered lover and hides it in a pot of basil. Seek advice before trying this yourself.

Meet at the gate leading to the north side of St. Mary's Church next to the war memorial. There are several small free car parks in Bruton and there are places outside the immediate centre where you can park on the side of the road e.g. beside King's Bruton school. Car sharing is recommended. Bruton is 21 miles from Trowbridge (WWR centre) taking about 37 mins by car.
