"...He had two sons and a daughter fair..." Starting outside St. Mary's Church in Bruton we head north-west through some glorious Somerset countryside - at times it feels like you are on top of the world looking down. Through Stoney Stratton and up to the foot of the hill fort at Small Down Knoll. Return journey takes us through Westcombe and Batcombe Vale before coming back in to Bruton. This is a hilly walk (similar in feel to the combes south of Bath) with at least five 5-10 minute uphill climbs. At the end Bruton offers opportunities for a coffee stop to monitor progress on the day.
Look at the link for more than you ever need to know about "Bruton Town" the folk song. I like the bit about the variant called "The Basil Pot" where a woman lops off the head of a murdered lover and hides it in a pot of basil. Seek advice before trying this yourself.
Most of the paths are very clear with mainly well-maintained gates and just a few stiles. There will be some road walking on quiet side roads though care should be taken as local traffic can travel quite fast. Dogs are very welcome but owners must put them on a lead where signs require.
