This scenic 8-mile circular walk explores the delightful woodlands and commons linking Chislehurst, Petts Wood, and Scadbury Park on the edge of south-east London.
From Chislehurst Station, we head across Chislehurst Common and into Petts Wood, now a National Trust site. Here we visit the William Willett Memorial Sundial, dedicated to the local resident who campaigned for the introduction of daylight saving time — a bright idea that changed how we all use daylight.
Our route continues through tranquil woods and open glades to reach Scadbury Park Nature Reserve, a large area of countryside rich in wildlife and history. We’ll pause to explore the moated ruins of the Tudor manor house once owned by the Walsingham family — a fascinating reminder of Elizabethan England hidden among the trees.
We then return to Chislehurst via shaded woodland paths and commons, finishing near the village ponds.
At the end of the walk, there’s an optional visit to Chislehurst Caves, with guided tours starting on the hour — we should arrive in good time for the 3:00 or 4:00 pm tour (entry fee payable).
