Overview

We will be walking the first part of the The Hangers Way long-distance route, starting at Alton Railway Station and venturing into the lush Hampshire countryside. It is a hilly walk and our journey will take us along the steep-sided wooded hills known as “The Hangers” (hence the name of the trail), culminating in the charming market town of Petersfield.

Much of this walk lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with unspoilt landscapes that allow  to fully immerse yourself in nature. We will pass through serene villages, meadows, peaceful woodlands, and tackle steep hills that offer exhilarating views.  There are some overgrown plants on the path. Although they are few and short, it's advisable to wear long sleeves and trousers.

We will have lunch in the beautiful small village of Selborne, where we there is a cafe, a pub and access to toilets (in addition to an excellent pottery shop). Bring a packed lunch.

Be prepared for a demanding walk, as there are several long uphill sections, but the breath-taking scenery and sense of achievement will make it all worthwhile. From the stunning views at the top of the Shoulder of the Mutton Hill we look across the valley of the South Downs and read a poem by Edward Thomas!

No booking required.

The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors such as, weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken.
