This walk is part of a project to visit every piece of common land* in London.
This walk visits seven commons in Southwark (though some are extremely small) and only two in Lambeth (but they are very fine commons).
Southwark Commons:
- Nunhead Green
- Peckham Rye Common
- Land in front of 93–115, Dulwich Village
- Land in front of 33–41, College Road
- Land in front of 11–25 College Road
- Land in front of Dulwich College
- Goose Green
Lambeth Commons:
- Streatham Common
- The Rookery
We will start from Queens Road Peckham station.
The lunch stop will be at Dulwich Picture Gallery.
We will finish at Streatham Station.
The walk will be at a brisk pace.
* I am defining common land to be any piece of land that is registered for the purposes of the Commons Act 2006, or is protected under separate local acts, such as Wimbledon and Putney Commons (which are protected under the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act 1871). Using this definition not all pieces of land that are called commons are in fact commons and many of the pieces of common land are not called commons.
Travel: Queens Road Peckham is in zone 2 and is served by The Windrush line between Dalston Junction and Clapham Common, and by Southern Railway between London Bridge and East Croydon. There are many options to get to the station eg 10:44 from London Bridge will arrive at 10:52 or the 10:30 from Clapham Junction will arrive at 10:47.
No dogs.
Toilets: There are supposed to be toilets at Queens Road Peckham station, but I forgot to check them, so you would be well advised to use the toilets on the train just in case. Unfortunately the toilets at Peckham Rye Common are closed and there are only toilets in cafes etc until we get to Dulwich Park by which time we will almost be at the lunch stop where there are also toilets.
The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors such as weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken or unforeseen diversion due to paths closure.
No booking required.
